Kazakh poet and activist Olzhas Suleimenov has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. The nomination was announced during a conference of the Kazakh Green Party Baytak.
The nomination is linked to Olzhas Suleimenov’s long-standing work in the anti-nuclear movement and peacebuilding. He is the founder of the international Nevada –Semey movement, which played a key role in the closure of the Semipalatinsk Nuclear Test Site.
The party noted that it considers Suleimenov’s contribution significant not only for Kazakhstan but also for the international community. Supporters of the initiative emphasize that his activities have contributed to strengthening global security and promoting the principles of nuclear disarmament.
At the same time, the nomination itself does not guarantee selection: the final decision is made by the Norwegian Nobel Committee.
Previously, Kazakh public movements raised the issue of the consequences of nuclear testing at the Semipalatinsk site at the United Nations, including the need to support victims and rehabilitate affected territories. In particular, an initiative calling for additional international support mechanisms for victims of nuclear tests was publicly announced at the UN in March 2025.
